Scholarship will honour Saskatoon teen killed in horrific crash

SASKATOON – The aunt of Sarah Wensley wants to honour the life of her niece who was killed this spring in a horrific crash in Saskatoon.

Wensley, 17, and J.P Haughey, 17, were killed on May 5 after police said a stolen truck ran through the intersection at Avenue M and 22nd Street and slammed into the car carrying the two teens and a friend.

At the time of her death, Wensley was on her way to a track and field practice.

Karen Wensley said it will be one way to remember her niece who loved sports, including basketball and volleyball.

“Dying in such a nonsense way and so tragic like that since she can’t be around, I’d like to see her memory live on, in one way or another, and that’s why I thought of the scholarship,” said Wensley.

With the scholarship taking shape, tickets for “Triumph for Tragedy,” a benefit concert, go on sale Tuesday at O’Brians Event Centre.

The all-ages, non alcohol event on Sept. 12 will feature Brad Johner & the Johner Boys, Donny Parenteau and Crate & Barrel.

The hope is to raise $20,000 in Sarah’s name with five scholarships given out to sports-oriented students with good grades who are wanting to attend either university or college.
