WATCH: Mysterious hole forms in Siberia

TORONTO – What is swallowing the Earth in Siberia?

Last September, residents living on the remote Yamal Peninsula in Siberia were surprised to find that a giant crater – some 30 metres wide and 70 metres deep – had mysteriously formed.

Now, two more craters have formed, one that is hundreds of kilometres from the first, leaving many people baffled.

According to media reports out of Russia, the second crater was discovered not too far from the first by reindeer herders on the Yamal Peninsula – which is known to locals as the “end of the world” due to its remoteness.

Yet another crater – that is between 60 and 100 metres deep, with a diameter of less than four metres – was found on the Taymyr Peninsula east of Yamal.

Experts have ventured to the first hole to study its composition, finding an icy lake at its bottom. The scientists believe that it is a natural phenomenon, but say that more study is needed to better understand how these craters form.
